The Outsiders

DIG IN

God Save The Queen

This week has been a very interesting week for pop-culture. I had the chance, finally, to sit down and watch the Oprah interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Honestly, at first, I was a little sympathetic to the situation they find themselves in. But, that didn’t last long at all. I then remembered that she is an actress by trade, not the best, but good enough to pull off playing the role of the poor girl treated like an outcast by a racist royal family. She played the part well.

The more I watched the interview and the more time I have had to reflect on it, I realize that all they are doing is lowering the bar and driving a huge wedge between her husband and his family. Listening to her talk about her time in Brittain, you would swear that she was kidnapped by A-Qaeda and tortured for 2 years and then finally managed to escape her mean, rude and racist captures. This of course is not the case.

I’m sure that giving up your individualism and privacy is not easy to deal with, but doing so in the lap of luxury in a literal palace with every want and need met wouldn’t be that difficult. Maybe it proved to be too difficult for her?

Regardless of how you feel, throwing shade on the Queen of England and accusing her of racism, isn’t a good look. It will be interesting to see where this story goes and if the walls that they both placed between them and the Royal family will ever able to be torn down. At this point, they are some pretty high and thick walls.

Billie Eilish and The Right Recipe

Billie Eilish is only 19 years old and is considered one of the most popular and successful artists and songwriters in the business today. How did she achieve this level of stardom in such a short period of time?

On today’s podcast, I discuss her, her success, the recipe and the AppleTV+ documentary that documents the journey to this point.

There is so much to take away from Billie, her brother and the process they followed to achieve the level of success they are currently seeing and there is only more to come.

Who is Billie Eilish: Billie is an American singer-songwriter. She first gained attention in 2015 when she uploaded the song “Ocean Eyes” to SoundCloud, which was subsequently released by the Interscope Records subsidiary Darkroom. The song was written and produced by her brother Finneas O’Connell, with whom she collaborates on music and live shows. Her debut EP, Don’t Smile at Me (2017), became a sleeper hit, reaching the top 15 in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.

Eilish’s debut studio album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (2019), debuted atop the US Billboard 200, reached number-one in the UK, and became one of the best-selling albums of 2019. The album’s fifth single “Bad Guy” became her first number-one song on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2020, she performed the theme song “No Time to Die” for the James Bond film of the same name, which became her first number-one single in the UK. Her later singles “Everything I Wanted”, “My Future”, and “Therefore I Am” peaked within the top 10 in the US and UK.

Her accolades include five Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, two Guinness World Records, three MTV Video Music Awards, and one Brit Award. She is the youngest person and the second in history to win the four main Grammy categories—Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year—in the same year. In 2019, Time magazine placed her on their inaugural Time 100 Next list. Eilish is the 26th-highest-certified artist of the digital singles era, according to the RIAA.

Banning Dr. Seuss & Dealing with Criticism

So, we are banning Dr. Seuss now. The cancel culture vultures have been given too much power and authority. The few are imposing their will on the many and it’s got to stop. Also in today’s episode, I tackle how to deal with criticism when we don’t get the positive affirmation we were really looking for. All of that and more in today’s episode of The Steve Freeman Podcast.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

I’ve had an interesting and journey-filled life. Even though I, like most, look back and see unfulfilled purpose, there are times when things happen that cause me to look back with far more appreciation. Today is one of those times.

Yesterday, I learned of the passing of a person that played a huge role in a very significant chapter in my life. When I heard the news, rather than being sad, I actually smiled. Before the sadness set in, I remembered this difficult and exciting time in my life with a different reverence that I previously had. Upon my reflection, I realized that had none of that happened, I wouldn’t be where I am today, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to accomplish the amazing things that life has blessed me with. I would’ve stayed on that trajectory and ended up no telling where. For once, I looked back on those times and was thankful.

We never know if the road we are on is the road that will lead us to where we want to go, it may just be a temporary stretch that leads to the road that will. In today’s episode, I share the story of what led me here in hopes that my past may help your future.

Politics, Religion & Her OnlyFans

We have become such a judgemental society. In today’s episode, we are talking about 3 stories from the past week that show just how involved and critical we are of our fellow man. American Idol producers and judges are under fire for sending home a moderately talented 16-year-old transgendered boy, a mom and wife in California sees her 3 high school kids kicked out of their Catholic school for having an OnlyFans account and Good Mythical Mornings’ Rhett and Link are in the crosshairs for speaking the truth about “Christianity”. This truth could cost them millions of subscribers on YouTube.

Radio Is Finally Irrelevant and Morgan Wallen Provides the Proof

The final nail in terrestrial radio’s coffin has been hammered in. Mainstream radio is now completely irrelevant thanks to Morgan Wallen.

Since his racial slur incident, radio completely removed him from their playlists. Despite this fact, Wallen generated over 2 Million dollars in sales and streaming revenue in the immediate 9 days after radio blackballed his music and completely wiped his name from their lips.

There has never been a better time to be an independent artist. The final brick of the final wall that stood as an obstacle for indie artists to reach potential fans has been removed.

Free Speech, My Ass!!

The star of Disney+’s The Mandalorian, Gina Carano, has been fired from the show for her tweets. Her employers, Disney+ and LucasFilm called her comments on social media “abhorrent and unacceptable”.

“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” a Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.” – Hollywood Reporter

In today’s episode, I go over the tweets and I’ll let you be the judge.

I’m Sick of The Apologies

I for one have just about had it with all of the politically correct bullshit that our country has turned into. We say we want to come together, but every move we make is designed to separate us even further.

Morgan Wallen is still on his apology tour, Jeep pulls their ad featuring Bruce Springsteen over DWI and reckless driving charges and a few ugly truths about social media and the music business. All that and more in today’s episode of The Steve Freeman Podcast.

Who’s Shorting Your Stock?

What happened last week with GameStop stock is a perfect example of how we can look at our lives and careers, especially for those of you in the music business. There are more people than you would like to imagine that are shorting your stock as songwriter, artist, producer, business owner and entrepreneur. The major labels and publishing companies want to buy low and sell high.

We can learn some lessons about the powers that be and how they manipulate the markets to keep our value low so that we are cheap to acquire, but then when the value rises, they are the only ones that will benefit!
